The laboratory experiment replicates, on a small scale, the geological conditions of carbonate aquifers. The hydrogeological investigation focuses on selecting coastal areas significantly influenced by groundwater discharge to the sea. Based on the findings, a simplified, confined small-scale aquifer model was designed and constructed to assess the ability of electrical methods to characterize and monitor coastal aquifers. The laboratory setup involved two and three-layer models composed of:
- A carbonate layer saturated with saltwater (salt concentration = 30 g/L), representing a saline aquifer;
- A seawater or freshwater layer, with a depth ranging between 10 and 15 cm, simulating coastal or marine conditions;
- A seawater or freshwater saturated sand layer, with a depth ranging between 0 and 10 cm, simulating coastal or marine conditions.
This model allows controlled observations of the geoelectrical response to freshwater infiltration, salinity variations, and the behavior of subsurface fluid migration
