The Hydrogeosite Experimental Field (CSH), located in Marsico Nuovo (PZ) in the Val D’Agri region, was established in 2006 as a facility for hydrogeophysical research, particularly involving electrical and electromagnetic methods. It was funded through the 2003 MIUR initiative to support the development of research infrastructure in Southern Italy.
Today, the CSH hosts a wide range of research activities in collaboration with national and international universities, research institutions, and private industry. These collaborations span regional, national, and international projects, as well as industrial contracts focused on geophysics for environmental monitoring.
The facility enables near real-scale experimentation in hydrogeophysical and hydrogeological disciplines. It provides a controlled environment for simulating multi-scale “analog” systems applicable to environmental science, engineering, archaeology, and resource exploration. The site supports the deployment of diverse sensors for monitoring geophysical and hydrogeological parameters, and it facilitates the testing of innovative geophysical methods, 3D and 4D dynamic analyses, and the integration of multi-sensor data.
The CSH includes an Indoor Laboratory wich houses a large experimental pool measuring 12 × 7 × 3 meters, enabling hydrogeophysical tests at an intermediate scale between laboratory and field studies. The pool features a ring recharge system, 15 strategically placed piezometers, and a horizontal sampling system at various depths. This setup allows for precise control and monitoring of the water table, making it possible to simulate and analyze a broad range of hydrogeological processes. Additional smaller tanks support reduced-scale, controlled experiments.
